Soonhyuck Park (2007), Against Minimizing Computation. Journal of Language Sciences 14-1, 109～126. Economy is basically a matter of competence, excluding relations beyond the interfaces. The economy principles pertain to the stages in the construction of representations at LF and PF interfaces, which are internal to the language faculty. Computing derivations is guided by the narrow syntactic requirement that the least costly, minimized one be used. Internal Merge enables multiple occurrences of a lexical item in the edges of phase, yielding connectivity effects in long-distance dependencies. The economy at PF interface serves to obtain the phonological effect of the copy only in the final stage of derivation. There are, however, cases where some (or all) copies in the intermediate stages are realized morphologically, which are seemingly counter-examples of the minimization requirement on PF interface.
